SENATE TO VOTE ON STOPGAP BILL TO AVOID SHUTDOWN; DOE TO REMAIN FUNDED THROUGH MARCH

ECA Staff| 01/16/2024

Today the Senate will begin procedural votes on a stopgap spending bill that will help avoid a partial government shutdown. This temporary spending bill would ensure that the Department of Energy, Army Corps of Engineers, and Bureau of Reclamation remain unaffected by a shutdown. These agencies would continue to receive funding until March 1, under this CR.

This weekend the Senate released their amendment to H.R. 2872 which would extend government funding through March 1 for some agencies and programs and others through March 8. This first deadline would cover agencies that currently face a January 20th deadline.

This first deadline would cover the following agencies:

  • Agriculture-FDA

  • Energy and Water

  • Military Construction-VA

  • Transportation-Housing and Urban Development.

H.R. 2872 would provide $58 billion for energy and water programs in FY24. With a prioritization on programs that would boost national and energy security.

While this stopgap would be a step in avoiding a shutdown, Congress still has the responsibility to pass 12 full year funding bills prior to these deadlines, or face a full government shutdown.

ECA will continue to provide updates on this vote and appropriations as Congress moves forward.
