Yesterday, Congress passed a stopgap bill to extend funding for another six weeks. The January 19 and February 2 shutdown deadlines have been pushed to March 1 and 8 due to this new continuing resolution (CR) H.R. 2872. The Senate passed the CR in a 77-18 vote, and the House passed it 314-108. This CR extends government funding through March 1 for some agencies and programs and others through March 8.
This March 1 deadline covers funding for the following agencies:
Agriculture-FDA
Energy and Water
Military Construction-VA
Transportation-Housing and Urban Development.
H.R. 2872 would provide $58 billion for energy and water programs in FY24. With a prioritization on programs that would boost national and energy security.
While this stopgap bill have ensured temporary funding for government agencies and avoided a shutdown. Congress still has the responsibility to pass 12 full year funding bills prior to these deadlines, or face a full government shutdown. This is the third stopgap spending bill in four months as Congress has struggled to agree on long-term funding plans.
ECA will continue to provide updates as appropriation bills move forward.
